Regardless of the level of fitness, there are fantastic walks in Mayo to suit everyone, some of these beautiful walks starting from the village of Murrisk.

Mayo is an ideal walking destination.  It has so much to offer  walkers with it’s largely unspoilt, clean countryside, varying landscapes, and unique scenery.  It is also rich in heritage and folklore.  It can offer most types of walks including mountain &  hill walks, coastal and inland walks plus rural and urban walks.

Croagh Patrick Pilgrim Walk

Croagh Patrick Hostel & Cottages is only 300m to ascent start for Croagh Patrick Mountain, which rises to a height of 762m. It takes approximately 2 hours for the average person to reach the summit and approximately 1.5 hours to descend.

Great Western Greenway

The world-class Great Western Greenway is a 42km traffic-free cycling and walking facility which primarily follows the line of the famous Westport to Achill Island Railway. It runs from Murrisk all the way to Achill Island.View Map (PDF)

Murrisk Heritage Loop

This walk goes along the seashore, country roads, tracks, and through mountain commonage (shared land). It encompasses a number of historical sites. A moderate level of fitness is suggested for this 12k walk (2-3 hours)

Slí na Sláinte - Westport

There are four Slí na Sláinte walking routes in County Mayo - Ballina, Belmullet, Ceathru Thaidgh (Carrowtigue) & Westport. Slí na Sláinte translates as 'path to health'. Developed by the Irish Heart Foundation, Slí na Sláinte walking routes are marked by bright colourful signposts. The signposts are not numbered and are situated at 1 km intervals.View Map (PDF)
